Sam Spade loves to play in boxes! As I unpack the cardboard boxes, he jumps into the empty carton and runs around! He plays for about half an hour and then gets sleepy and takes a nap...

If I interfere with his play time, he barks until I give him "his box" again.

Buck-buck is back! Deer love my roses...

Last year, the deer ate our roses, tulips, tomatoes, etc. The mama deer usually brought her male offspring with her. I named him buck-buck (I don't know any deer names other than Bambi) and he became a regular visitor. He would look at me as I walked the dogs with disinterest -- and continue to munch on the salad bowl that was provided.

This morning was the first time I spotted him this year. My, what a sight! His coat is darker and he has grown antlers (6 prongs?). He watched me drink my coffee on the back porch, wagged his white tail, and showed me his girlfriend standing in the tall weeds. She was shy but very tall and stately. I called to Sweet T. Pie to come into the house and not disturb them.

I caught him looking for tomatoes. Looks like we'll have some little spotted ones come spring (deer not tomatoes).

Last year, Slim Jim Tucker would stretch across the entrance to the greenhouse and wait for a mouse just like his mother, Blackie, would do the year before. Today, as I was taking Cherry Cookie out for her daily walk, I noticed that one of the dogs had been playing with a belt... a skinny belt about four feet long! And it started to move! Cherry Cookie and I just waited until the 'Belt' crawled out of the way. He was beautiful-- like a checker board design on his back. Cherry wanted me to keep him but then he wouldn't be catching any mice so I let him go. These are photos from a website since I didn't have my camera with me.

Cherry Cookie had a C-section about three o'clock this afternoon. She had three males and one female. The birthing pictures don't show much other than wet, pink snouts, and some bloody smears... You can see the umbilical clamps. Originally the only way to quickly tie off the umbilical cord was an awkward hemostat. We tried bobby pins, thread, hair twists, and then Dr. Frank found some "human" umbilical clamps and that's what we've been using since. The tall vet tech is Justin (it's his birthday!)

Farrah - English bulldog puppy - weaning!

Farrah is weaned! Her mother (Dixie Pie) decided to cut Farrah's feedings short which left the puppy without enough nourishment. Since the puppy's eyes had been open for a couple of days, and she can move around without flipping on her back (like a turtle) I made up a "solid food" supplement: Two tablespoons of Purina Puppy Chow, two tablespoons of hot water, and three tablespoons of half and half. Let the kibbles soak for thirty minutes and let the blender mush it into a slurry. The first few days, I've been feeding her with a syringe sans needle. I let her nurse on a finger tip and slide the syringe tip into her cheek and SLOWLY empty the syringe into her mouth. She sucks it naturally. Next step is letting her find the food in a bottle top or small saucer. She should be able to lap it up.

Hi Kris!

All of our bulldogs (and the six strays that came to stay) all eat Purina Dog Chow. The adults eat DRY with plenty of water available. I usually limit the older bulldogs to two or three cups per day. But they stay chunky. Nothing looks worse than a skinny bulldog (LOL). Bulldog puppies need Purina Puppy Chow up to the age of two years (that's what they told me...)

The ear problem sounds like yeast infection and the cleaner is on the web site (puppygal.com) Whenever we rescue a bulldog that has ears with yeast, we keep up the treatment for three weeks after it looks all clear... get yourself a big box of Q-tips and be real careful -- a bulldogs ears and eyes are the only delicate part of a bulldog.

Have fun with your bullie! And remember, don't laugh at him if he does something bad... they want you to be happy so they will repeat their actions if you laugh.

Dixie Pie's puppies that were born five days ago are doing just fine. The three female pups are gaining weight. Farrah is the largest and as you can see, she uses her sisters as pillows. Kate is the one on the bottom in this picture and Jaclyn is curled up in the back. Nursing times are every three hours now. They all seem to be healthy -- no sneezing or coughing. Two are so tiny and so cute! I find myself counting toes (just checking...)

Pink noses are healthy. That means their blood has lots of oxygen. By the time they are 8 weeks old, their noses and lips will have turned black. That's a sign of bulldog purity. The grandmother (Sweet Tater Pie) is from championship lines in Tupelo and their father (Jazzman) is from the famous Dingman's Badger line.

Cherry Cookie is showing -- she might be pregnant! If she is, her due date is July 3 or July 5. The prognosis was bad when she contracted a vaginal bacterial infection while she was in heat. But she's one happy girl now. She just loves her puppies.

Dixie Pie (our English bulldog) has three new puppies. They are all females and our Vet suggested -- Charlie's Angels!!! So here are the Angels: Farrah, Kate, and Jaclyn!

The puppies are much smaller than normal but seem healthy. The first two or three days will be critical. Dixie Pie has plenty of milk and her nipples are just the right size for these three pups. Scheduled feeding times are every two hours for the first few days. The littlest one (Jaclyn) doesn't nurse as vigorously as the other two so I am expressing about 3 cc's of Dixie's milk for her and feeding her with a dropper.

Dixie Pie (female English bulldog) moves to the kitchen so that she can be checked every hour day and night until labor starts. Other signs that she's getting close are lack of appetite, temperature dropping below 100 degrees, and nesting. Another indication is that her milk comes in. Although sometimes, the first milk comes when she hears her baby cry.

Nesting is where the canine searches for a quiet, dark "cave" where she can be alone. We had one female, "Amber", crawl under the back porch. I had to pry off several deck 1 x 6's to locate her and ease her into the house. Early in raising English bulldogs, I stayed up with the mother-to-be all night. Several litters were delivered in my lap...

This picture of Dixie Pie was taken an hour ago and as you can see, she's still eating so I can relax... NOT.

This is exciting! Dixie Pie is pregnant for her first time! She's on the short, small size which is great for small home owners. She is showing but until the vet delivers those puppies, I'm not counting. The sire, The Jazzman, is oblivious to his upcoming litter. He just snores away...

Don't make deposits until I post puppy pictures. Deposit will be $250 and Dixie Pie's puppy price will be a total of $1,750. So complete the PuppyGal Application and if approved, pick out your puppy and put in a deposit. Puppies will be born in about a week.

Snapping Turtle?

As I was motoring up the driveway, there was a large turtle climbing out of a muddy pool of water on his (or her) way to the pond. It was a foot long and ten inches wide! According to the locals, there are many, many turtles in the ponds in this county! I hope they eat mosquito larva...

Up All Night With A Sick Friend - Melanie (German Shepherd)

Melanie is ill! Yesterday morning, several of the English bulldogs got their baths on the back porch. Melanie happened by and asked if she could help. She loves to help. "You need a bath yourself," I told her. So I soaked her down and rubbed in some tick and flea soap. Well, I didn't do a good enough job rinsing the soap out of her double layered fur. And I should not have sprayed her with flea mist so soon after her bath. The combination caused a reaction that laid her low! She just wanted to lie down in the kitchen and watch me with those big brown eyes. Since 4 this morning, she has passed the low point. She went to the back door and wanted out -- a very good sign.

Melanie has passed early Saturday morning in her sleep. I will always think of her as she was a constant companion, a gift from Judy.

Update: Cause of death was tick and flea soapy water. Melanie drank from the kiddy pool that I had been rinsing the bulldogs in. I should have put her up.

Sweety Pie, female English bulldog, Loves Her Bath!

Sweetie Pie loves her bath. She saw the tick and flea shampoo in my hand and made a bee-line to the back door. How she can be so smart sometimes and so dumb other times is hard to figure out. She climbed into the kiddie pool where she gets her weekly bath and waited for me to spray her down. What she likes best of all is when she gets shampooed and then gets scratched and massaged all over (especially around her tail!)

Just about the time the rinse water was being sprayed, Sweet Pea came strolling down the driveway. She had been frightened by a loud clap of thunder and broke out of her exercise pen to come find her Daddy. She got lots of loving and petting before I put her up.

Meanwhile, Sweetie Pie was shaking off her bath water and ready for a nap. She did NOT get too much loving because she smelled like a wet dog.

Mo (as in Larry, Curly and Mo) and Jerry Lee Lewis (both bulldogs) were the last two to be escorted from the greenhouse to the Dog Barn. I put Mo into her crate for the rest of the hot afternoon (the Dog Barn is air conditioned) and turned around for Jerry Lee. No Jerry Lee! So, back to the greenhouse - no Jerry Lee! So, back to the Dog Barn scanning the fields for movement of any kind... No Jerry Lee! I called and called. But from around the Bulldogmobile came a very hot and thirsty Jerry Lee! How can you be mad at a lovable little bulldog? (Not so little any more!)

Fruit Flies + Fruit = Summertime Blues

Hope this email finds you well! I used to email with Judy about my bulldogs, Mabelline and Romey. I was also a daily visitor to her Journal - I sure miss her!

With regard to your fruit fly problem, I had the same thing one time. I have a compost pile and I keep a pail under the sink to store scraps until I'm ready to walk them out to the composter. I had forgotten that I left scraps in there for a while, and for whatever reason decided to open up the lid in the kitchen, and about a thousand fruit flies flew out all over the kitchen!

What worked like a charm was the following: get a small bowl and put about one inch of apple cider vinegar, then swirl around a couple of drops of dish detergent into that vinegar and leave it on the counter. The vinegar has a strong odor and once they sit on the mixture with the dish detergent, they can't fly away. I caught almost all of them out of the kitchen in about 24 hours!

Melanie (the German Shepherd) Wants to Help!

Melanie, the German Shepherd Rescue, loves to help. She gets as close to the action as she can and when I take care of the bulldogs, she trots right along side making sure that they stay on the walking trail.

Does she help? Of course! and I sure need the help.

The kitchen remodeling is about half done. The base cabinets, the wall cabinets, are all installed and the above the stove microwave is installed. Now comes the organization phase. What goes were and why? I've emptied the old cabinets and found lots of extra cooking utensils like seven woks! Two pumpkin extractors... I thought that I had unloaded all the frying pans and stewers. Then I remembered that there were twenty cast iron frying pans in the bottom drawer of the stove!!!

I have fruit flies! How do you get rid of fruit flies? I tried orange juice, wine and beer. The beer attracts them the best but they seem to be multiplying. If you have a suggestion, please send it to the address above: mailto:drbob1guru@gmail.com

A Rose for Cherry Cookie (English bulldog)

Early in the morning, under a layer of Velcro weeds, I found a pink rose bush that escaped the sharp teeth of the neighborhood deer. The buds are beautiful.

Cherry Cookie started bleeding again so I took her to the vets this morning. She has a horrific bacterial infection. I've dosed her with antibiotics. She has a raised temperature and should be alright in ten days. But, that means the chances of having a litter this year are very small. Poor baby -- she loves her little puppies.

Close Counts in Horseshoes And Tornadoes!

The map shows how close the English bulldogs came to the fierce storm that ravaged Pocahontas which is three miles to the north of Puppy Gal.

If you drive about a mile along Pocahontas Road and take a left on Tomlinson Road for about a mile, you will be at the location of the nearest tornado.

The bulldogs did wake up while the wind and thunder was making all of its noise. But, then decided it was more important to get a nap so the snoring continued.

The A-I of Cherry Cookie and Rhubarb Pie went well this morning. That makes three females bred in the last thirty days:
Dixie Pie w/ The Jazzman ... April 5, 7 and 9
Rosamond w/ Elvis II ... April 7, 9 and 10
Cherry Cookie w/ Rhubarb Pie ... May 1, 3 and 5

Gestation is 63 days on average. I'll be releasing puppies to their new homes when they are eight weeks old. They will have been vet checked, wormed and all puppy shots will be current. A non-refundable deposit of $250 will hold a puppy for purchase. Purchase price will be from $1,600 to $2,000 depending on the puppies conformance.

Warning to Breeders: The old Nigerian scam is being recycled again! I just received one by Email. This is how it works: A breeder will get an Email saying that in no uncertain terms that they want to buy your puppy. They will pay shipping. They will pay through a third party. (Note Well) You will receive one or two drafts for hundreds of dollars in excess of the price of the puppy and shipping charges. You are supposed to deposit the bank drafts (such a Wells Fargo, etc.) and send a check for the difference. As soon as the check is in their hands, the bank draft is stopped and your check is cashed. Don't do it!

This scam won't work with me because I don't sell to pushy people -- you bulldog owners are sweet! I don't ship -- it's too hard on the puppies. I only let people have my bullies when meeting them face to face!

The other scam that I'm familiar with is setting up a website with my pictures of bulldog puppies and selling them for five or six hundred dollars. There are usually misspelled words, poor English, no telephone number, no real address. If anyone sees this scam, comment on it on this blog. I'll set up a page for scams.

The English bulldogs do not like thunder -- (nor does the German Shepherd, Melanie) so last night when the wind, rain, and hail came through our part of the county, the dogs couldn't sleep so they paced and paced and paced. The rain lasted until 6 p. m. at which time, all the dogs took a nap! They are still sleeping and I expect they will remain that way until tomorrow morning.

Most of the iris suffered water and wind damage but the clematis survived! In fact, they look better today than they did yesterday morning -- nothing like a shower and a blow dry!

Sweet little Cherry Cookie is in heat! She's being very playful and happy except when JEB Stuart comes sniffing around! The male that I've selected is Rhubarb Pie -- He's all male! I checked with him this morning to see if he's okay with being a father... He said, "Okay by me..." That's all I need: another horny male!

Mr. Cat and I took a tour of the flower garden this morning before breakfast. He's very affectionate when he's hungry. He even let's me pet him.

The sun was just peeking over the horizon lighting up the hundreds of iris blooms. "Hundreds?" ... Yes, hundreds. Judy loved to stop along the back-roads whenever she saw a colorful array of iris. She'd ask for a couple of bulbs (tubers) and end up with twenty or thirty. We'd come home and prepare a square foot and lay the new iris out and cover with an inch of potting soil. She didn't put much stock in the old adage that planting iris to close to each other stunted their blossoms. So by now, each Spring hundreds of iris in every color you can imagine bloom to say, "Hallelujah!"

Please help me!! I bought my bitch 2 years ago from somebody who was not a breeder. (I later found out they fed the puppies mealy meal) When she came home I fed her Science diet and she did well until she got diarrhea. My vet suggested I feed her rice and fat-less chicken to build up her strength. Well since then she has been refusing to eat dry food. She is still eating rice and chicken or sometimes I mix it with cooked meat (which she likes a lot) like you suggest on your blog. The problem is she just had puppies, she's very thin and it seems the foods not satisfying her. The other problem is that her stools are always very loose and sometimes even slimy plus she's got a lot of gas! This doesn't seem healthy to me. I have tried introducing back the dry food by mixing it with the other food and soaking it but she is extremely stubborn about this. When she smells it she refuses to eat anything! Please do you have any suggestions for me. I will be very grateful!

Hi Lientjie!
First: make sure she has fresh water at all times.
-- With new mothers I try a cup of milk or baby formula. I let mine drink three cups a day-- one cup every meal time.
-- I always feed my puppies Purina Puppy Chow up to the age of two or three years.
When they are not eating, I will soak the Puppy Chow with equal parts of water (like a cup of Puppy Chow with a cup of warm water)
Make sure that you don't let her eat any left over food (food that's been out for three hours can go bad)
If she won't eat either dry or soaked Puppy Chow, try mixing in a tablespoon of chopped garlic (from Wal*Mart)
If that doesn't work, try skinned, boiled chicken breast mixed into Purina Puppy Chow or greasy hamburger.
I've got one stubborn bullie (Baby Noel) that I feed dry Purina Puppy Chow with bacon grease and little pieces of bacon.

If your new mother is running a temperature (above 103) take her to the vet. She may have complications from the birthing.

Some bulldogs are allergic to lamb and rice. Almost all bulldogs do not get enough calories from Science Diet so I've been avoiding all Science Diet. Likewise, most cheap dog food causes gas and diarrhea so avoid them.

Let me know if any of these work or not.

The Microwave Installed!

Last night, two neighbors helped me install the 'over-the-range' microwave. It's more awkward than heavy but something that one person shouldn't do.

All of the cabinets have been installed. Now, I've got to make a counter tops out of one by two strips of spruce. Judy wanted to stain them with walnut oil... should be interesting.

Sweet T. Pie knows that the refrigerator is chock full of goodies! JEB sleeps most of the day which gives Sweety Pie the opportunity to stand guard. Sometimes she lies down in front of the door so if the door gets opened, she's ready!

She's six years old and weighs about 47 pounds. Her biggest treat is beef ribs. Wal*Mart has them for just under $2 (regular price) but Judy trained to wait until they mark them down. Then some go to the freezer and some go to the oven with Judy's bbq rub for 35 minutes at 350. If you like prime rib roast, you'll love beef back ribs! And the bullies get healthy treats.

The Return of Baby Noel... again!

The day before the storms hit Mississippi and Western Tennessee, Baby Noel ran off into the woods. Even with a gimpy left front paw, she can run as fast as any other bulldog.

Why she ran off, who knows. It's one of those "games" that she plays. She watches me and when my back is turned, she scampers!

After four hours of searching, (with help from the three ditch puppies) we all gave up... No Baby.

That night when the storms hit, the crew and I went searching again but gave up -- hoping that she had found a dry place to stay. Off and on over the next two days, we would search and call but no puppy.

Tonight as I was backing out of the driveway, there she was! So I picked her up and into the house we went. A warm towel from the dryer, fresh water and a bowl of Purina Puppy Chow fixed her up. After some puppy loving, she crawled into her bed and said, "Good night... It's good to be home."

Thunder and Lightning!

The bulldogs do not like thunder and neither does Melanie (German Shepherd) so when the storm clouds came up from the South, we all hunkered down. The only problem we had was that the lights went out for a minute and of course, the noise.

The bulldog standing by Melanie is Sweet Tater Pie -- Sweety Pie. She and Melanie follow me around as I do chores. They just said that they need to go out so I'm off to check on the menagerie.

Judy 'found' Melanie for me. Melanie is a German Shepherd and Judy knew that I'd always wanted one. So when Sheri Chance of the Hardeman County (TN) Animal Control called, we said that we were interested and planned a meeting. As soon as Melanie saw me, she walked over and gave me kisses. We brought her home. She's been here for two and a half years and loves her job (keeping all the English bulldogs in line.)

First Rose at Dogwood Pond

Last year the roses were plentiful but then the deer started nibbling the bushes. This "Celebration" rose is one of the few that survived. I've been told that to keep out the deer, I must build a seven foot fence. And electrify it. I was of the opinion that the "porch dogs" would keep the deer away... nooo! The rescue dogs are afraid of deer or should I say that the deer are NOT afraid of the porch dogs no matter if they bark all night.

Put Your English Bulldog Up Before Mowing

Yesterday, the grass got cut! Not all of it but enough that I won't lose a bulldog in the underbrush! While mowing, several rocks were thrown out which got me to thinking-- it's a good thing that I had put up the bulldogs before I started trimming their "pasture" or they could have serious eye injuries.

I've received inquiries on reserving future bulldog puppies. Just so you know, You have to wait until the puppies are born and checked and pictures are posted on this blog before putting a deposit on one. If the breeding takes, the puppies should be born in early June. They will be priced from $1,600 to $2,000 with a $250 deposit.

Ruckus = Spoiled English Bulldog

Ruckus is spoiled! It seems as though he has it made with his new family, Mona and Chad. He watches TV, sleeps, and eats. Mona says that he's so big, she can't lift him any more! This is a picture of Ruckus waking up. His tongue (which always sticks out when he sleeps) is ready for loving-- so watch out or you'll get a sloppy kiss.

I visited with Mona and Chad last Sunday. Ruckus ran to me and scrambled up into my lap. Such a happy boy! So spoiled...

Jerry Lee Leaves The Nest!

Jerry Lee Lewis from the Peanut Butter Cookie and Strawberry Pie family was adopted by Mathew this afternoon. His six year old daughter made the decision to pick Jerry Lee.

Everybody was happy that things worked out! Matt and family live close by so we're planning on visits and photos.

Reba McIntyre Adopted!

Reba has been adopted! After a fruitful career in bring-up-puppies, Reba has retired to the fields of western Tennessee. She gave her kisses to her daddy Bob and posed with her new parents.

She loves to be scratched just above the tail. I realize that English bulldogs are really loyal dogs unless somebody walks by with a sack full of burgers OR knows just where to scratch! Reba is a sweet bulldog that gets along well with other dogs. She's crate trained to sleep in the crate, go potty before breakfast, after breakfast, after lunch and after dinner. If somebody wants to, she would like to stroll around the grounds when it gets dark...

There's more love in one pound of English bulldog than ten pounds of any other breed!

Dingman's Badger

The Jazzman's pedigree line stems from Ch Dingman's Badger. The two photos show The Jazzman's mother and father: Dixieland's Miss B Haven. and Dingman's Badger Carbon Copy.

We've been asked not to display Dingman's Badger's Photo so being a nice person, we won't. Needless to say, The Jazzman has better conformance points. Plus Jazzman is friendly and loves his daddy.

Last week when I took Jazzman into the Vet's waiting room, he thought that everyone was waiting to see him! And, of course, he had to meet and greet everyone there (even the cat people...) One elderly woman asked me if bulldogs are supposed to breath so loudly. I assured that that's the way they sound when they are awake. She asked, "Oh, and they are quiet when they sleep?"
Honestly, they snore so loudly that they knock pictures off the wall.

The rule is quite simple -- Never let a bulldog sleep in your bed! Either they keep you awake all night with their snoring or they kick you out of bed.

Ugly English Bulldog

Baby Noel lost an eye at birth and her jaw is crooked and her left front leg is bent. One ugly bulldog. BUT she is a sweet as can be! And smart... I've moved her into the house so I can check her out. She seems fine but maintains a very independent demeanor. She's smart because she goes to the back door and stands there until I open it for her. I showed her a dog run once and she remembers and runs for it each time I let her out.

Baby Noel Lost But Now She Is Found!

Four days ago, Baby Noel decided to wander away while I was taking care of JEB Stuart! I looked and looked until it got dark. The next day it rained. I thought that she would make her way home -- a clean, warm, home with one of her favorite treats! Nope. Today, I got a call from a neighbor about a mile away and asked if I had a one eyed bulldog missing. Off I went to pick up our wandering gypsy. She's back in the house stuffed full with bologna and kibbles. I would tell her that she's grounded but she's used to doing what she wants. If she had a little finger, she'd wrap me around it. Judy would say, "I knew she'd come back..."

Everything plus the kitchen sink!

Last week Lowes had a 20% sale on in store kitchen cabinets. Now it's one thing that Judy taught me and that is wait for the bargain and then buy! So I did... So I saved $500 plus they gave me free shipping! Can't beat that.

One other reason that I went ahead and replaced the do-it- yourself cabinets was that I never got around to finishing them...

So I've replaced the "never quite finished" cabinets with Hickory specials and I've finished plumbing the kitchen sink! Note the wide draining boards on each side of the 'old time' sink... That's where I wash the puppies!

The west side is finished... It's time to start on the east side.

This last week, two of the smaller English bulldog females came into heat. They are pretty little girls so I bred Dixie Pie with The Jazzman and Rosie with Elvis II. Gestation is 63 days on average if the breeding 'took' but they should be showing in four or five weeks.

Jazzman is a classic English bulldog: built low to the ground with a large head, itty bitty tail, and rose ears. He loves his job!

Elvis II is a little taller than Jazzman but is really pretty with a classic head. His favorite activity is 'Canon Ball' where he runs as fast as he can at me, flare his chest and slam in to my legs. I hope that I've cured him. I've been standing in front of the gate to the dog run and just as he is to run into me, I step aside and he ends up behind the closed gate. I should get that on video!

Puppy Gal's New Beginning

This Blog is for Judy. She and I were together for twenty three years -- raising English bulldogs for the last fourteen years. It was a happy time. She was a beautiful, cheerful, loving woman that had a large following with her Judy's Journal. Judy lived for adventure: we toured the jungles of Yucatan; the hills of San Francisco; the native markets of Progresso; the deserted islands in the Bahamas; the street vendors in D. C.; and the flower gardens of Mississippi. She found joy in talking to strangers and listening to their life stories. She never knew how much she affected the lives of readers.

We have placed bulldogs all over the United States but mostly in the central states. Each puppy has been raised by Judy and myself in our kitchen. I will have a few litters a year to offset the dog food bill and fill the requests for puppies.

The blog will keep you up to date on events here at Dogwood Pond and recount some of the Lucy moments that Judy lived.
